webSCADA process control system

It is necessary for water utility companies that provide services on a large geographical area to be in the possession of a state-of-the-art process control system in order to be able to carry out an efficient, optimal and safe operation on a daily bases and to fulfil customers requirement at a high standard.

The modern process control systems are able to provide and efficient support in achieving the strategic goals of the corporation. At the same time, they can help to reduce the operation and maintenance costs significantly, meanwhile improving the security of supply.

With the application of such systems, significant savings can be achieved in the following areas:

  • Significant savings in operation costs
  • Strengthening the security of operation and supply
  • Establishment of integrated systems, immediate access to data
  • Possibility of unified control and management
  • Increase in the useful life of the installed technologies

Today’s modern process control systems are not only error signal collecting platforms but they are rather huge operation support systems, the performance of which is based on a large amount of collected data sets. These systems cannot function efficiently anymore like different isolated islands across the operational territory of the service provider and being disconnected from the other large informatic systems. (MIR, ERP)

As a result of a 15-year innovation research project, the webSCADA 6.0 was fully developed in Hungary. This process controls system can help the service providers with modern solutions in decreasing their expenses and in maximizing their operational safety. It is web based, can be accessed from smart phones and tablets and with help of automatically generated reports it can help with the preparation of internal and official data provisions. With the help of this, the decision makers are able to access the data in an easily understandable, structured and processable way.

The modernisation of the process control systems and their increasing and wide-spread installation can help the service provider to respond to the challenges of our times in an efficient and appropriate way.

The 6th generation of webSCADA uses the most modern informatic technologies that can assure the performance of the basic SCADA functions in the most advanced way. In addition to the basic “package”, the following features are also part of webSCADA that extend beyond the functions of a „usual” SCADA:

  • A wide range of field communications: Built-in communication drivers for industry-specific PLC types (Siemens, Schneider, Omron, Moeller, Allen-Bradley, Saia ...). Possibility to develop unique communication drivers.

  • Handling an unlimited amount of data: There are no limits to the amount of data that is being recorded. In the case of a large system, up to 25 billion data can be possibly generated and stored each year. Modern algorithms support the fast retrieval of this tremendous amount of data in common desktop computers.

  • Support for NoDB solutions: There is no need to purchase expensive database management systems. The webSCADA supports file-level data storage for graphs, event-; and daily data.

  • Optimized Graph Data Saving: The frequency of savings can be set, which can be a fixed to certain time intervals or to a percentage deviation compared to the changing value range. This can reduce the size of the graph database and increase the speed of data retrieval.

  • Query Wizard: From the enormous amount of data described in the preceding paragraphs, it is very important that the information that are needed for decisions reach the decision makers' table as efficiently and quickly as possible. Using the query wizard, reports can be easily generated in Excel sheets in various forms without any programming knowledge. The webSCADA uploads the reports from the data that are stored in the system and sends them to the appropriate person via email in a scheduled way.

  • Visualization of data on maps: The operational status of the system can be displayed on a freely available map. Many operators have spent tens of millions of forints to build up GIS systems, but 95% of users do not use more than what e.g.: Google Maps provides to the average internet users free of charge. This basic technology is used in our system. We can mark the utility networks and we can display data tables and information that are derived from the technical information system.

  • Built-in MIR functions: We provide the ability to display data tables for objects in the process control system, hence additional information can be also connected to the objects, e.g.: maintenance data.

  • Encryption and compression: The entire data traffic between the client and server is encrypted and compressed. On request, it is possible to use a HTTPS protocol for which there is no need to purchase a license because webSCADA generates its own a certificate.

  • Enhanced “right of access” system: The security of webSCADA's own right of access system is ensured by SHA512-based password encryption and other salted passwords. Highly scalable access can be provided to the units that are building up the process control system by creating access to user groups at various levels.

  • Browser independent client: The most up-to-date web technologies ensure that the client application is displayed to the users in the same way in all of the desktop and mobile browsers that are available today.

  • Embedded web server: There is no need to install a separate web server in the computer that is running the webSCADA server. The system creates and runs its own web server for serving the client applications.

  • Semantic Zoom: A special display format for the connection diagrams of the process control system. The technological image appears to the user with different details and different information content, when zooming at different levels. This helps to get a quick overview of the current state of operation but the display of a more detailed data in a narrower area, makes it possible to intervene if necessary.

  • Full support for smart phones and tablets: Today’s information technology is less and less about desktop computers, and more about smart mobile devices. The webSCADA system provides full support for these devices as well.
